Why Amateur Author?
If what I recently read is true, that 30% of the authors publishing on Amazon make less than $500 a year, then calling myself an amateur author is just saying I’m one of the multitudes. Attaching that tagline does more than just state the obvious, however.
First of all, it helps me temper my expectations. When I see a sudden spike in sales, or when friends and family are kind enough to give my book a five-star review, reminding myself I’m an amateur keeps me from making rash financial decisions.
Secondly, it frees me to do things the way I want to do them. It allows me to create my own book cover and write my own bio without feeling I need to abide by recommended do’s and don’t of the publishing industry. I may not be too old a dog to learn a few new tricks, but I’m definitely too crotchety to be told what to do.
So, I’m doing this for fun. And it is fun, provided I don’t start taking myself too seriously. And since Amazon has been kind enough to make it possible to publish my efforts, I can share my new hobby with the world in the hope that others may find my efforts as much fun to read as I find them to write.
